In May 2009, a film simply titled Coco Chanel & Igor Stravinsky debuted at the Cannes Film Festival. The film is dramatic exploration into the lives two of the world’s most famous celebrities at that time. They are the eccentric Russian musician, Igor Stravinsky and the fabulous French fashion designer Coco Chanel.

This movie is a French film that is based on the novel written by Chris Greenhalgh in the year 2002. It is a fictional novel; however many feel that the novel and movie are fact based. The film is generally about the alleged affair between Coco Chanel and Igor Stravinsky that they engaged in while living in Paris, France in 1920.

2009 was also the year that Anne Fontaine directed and released her movie based on the life of Coco Chanel. The movie, Coco avant Chanel, starred Audrey Tautou. Unfortunately the movie strictly based on the life of the designer was not as popular as the one based on her dramatic love affair.

The plot of the movie is rather engaging. The movie starts off in Paris, France in the year 1913. Coco Chanel is attending the premier a rather outrageous performance called Igor Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring. The ballet was extremely controversial which actually caused the audience to break out into the most well known musical riots ever.

The music and dance appalled the large audience, which sets off the biggest musical riot in history. But, young Coco was not offended in the least. In fact, she enjoyed the show and is especially interested in Igor when she sees him storming out of the angry theater.

It is seven years before the designer and the musician come into contact again. In 1920 Coco is a world renowned designer with a successful business. However, she is mourning her last lover, Arthur Capel. She meets Igor when he is forced to flee from Russia after the Russian Revolution. He has fled to France for safety. There is an instant attraction between the two.

Coco Chanel invites the musician, his wife, and his children to live in a villa outside of Paris that she owns. It is during that time that Chanel and Stravinsky begin their secret love affair. As a result of their secret and growing passion for one another, their work gets better and more creative. During this affair, the infamous perfume, Chanel No. 5 is created. It also said that during this affair, Stravinsky’s work began to take on a more liberated tone. As with any good love affair, their must be drama. The drama ensues when Igor’s wife finds out about the affair that her husband is engaging in with Coco Chanel.

The film was directed by Jan Kounen, and Chris Greenhalgh also wrote the screenplay. It was filmed in both French and English. Coco Chanel & Igor Stravinsky stars Mads Mikkelsen as Igor and Ann Mouglalis as Coco. It opened in theaters across the world in 2009 after the initial viewing at the Cannes Film Festival. It opened to mixed reviews. Some stated that the film has a sophisticated feel and some pivotal moments, but it is not a well developed story. This may cause viewers to keeping wanting more of what was not captured in the film.
